The USGA (US Golf Association) measures the difficulty of a course with a number that relates to the difficulty for an average player compared to one for an expert player. Topping the list of private courses, Firethorne Country Club comes in number one with a slope rating of 147.

Charlotte also has many difficult public and semi-private courses. Topping of the list for these is a three-way tie for first, each with a slope rating of 145.
