Three Local Businesses Banking on Detroit Pride

Hometown pride is a driving force in towns across America, but few can rival the zeal and enthusiasm that Detroit residents have for their community. When it comes to Detroit Pride, these three small businesses know that Detroit is rich.

Pure Detroit
Pure Detroit is perhaps one of the most impressive small businesses operating in the city today. The Pure Detroit shops bank on local pride in the city as well as a national interest in the resurrection of Detroit. Their three locations in Detroit landmarks – the Guardian Building, Fisher Building and Renaissance Center – celebrated a new addition in 2014 with a new shop opened on Detroit’s Belle Isle. The shops feature everything from iconic Detroit hoodies and t-shirt to car seat belts recycled into fashion belts, knit caps, dog leads and, of course, a slew of automotive memorabilia.

City Bird
Cities attract artists and Detroit attracts artists who thrive in even the harshest conditions. City Bird brings those artists together and gives them a common place to sell their goods and promote the love of Detroit. These small batch and handmade items provide a brisk business to their midtown location, their second store, Nest, next door and a thriving etsy storefront. As of 2014, City Bird plans to expand into direct internet marketing with their own website storefront as well as expanding their collection and bringing in new artists from the area.

Detroit Hardware
New startups may be getting a lot of press for Detroit, but stores with a bit of history have provided the foundation on which those newcomers can thrive. Detroit Hardware is the perfect example of this. With nearly 90 years already under its belt, the iconic hardware shop has seen Detroit weather a number of storms. Their secret to staying in business this long? A level of expertise they offer to each customer and a sense of humor which is displayed on their Facebook page. Want to know what day plunger sales skyrocket in Detroit? They’re the people who know.
